Is there a quality difference between a sound card and the motherboard sound device?
I mean for current motherboard that supports dual core processors. Will those sound card like Creative Audigy make any difference?
It depends. about three years ago, I would have said yes there is a major difference. but today, most Mid Range on board Sound Devices are NOT all to bad. they have all the same equalizing features and 3d effects of the more expensive sound cards. now, for gaming the Stand Alone cards with their own chache of ram for decoding sound WILL actually help gaming performance, but only 2-3 frames per second. is that worth $100?
My motherboard, EVGA 780i has a full 7.1 Surround support and it also has optical out support, something not seen on most stand alone sound cards even today. I didn’t see the reason to use the x-Fi sound card, I heard a difference on an older dell, but not on the new computer. so I sold it to a friend.
I guess what I’m trying to say is if You have a cheaper computer, or even an older expensive one. the on board probably isn’t as good, nor will it even beyond stereo. if you are trying to set up a Surround Sound System or just want a little better sound quality on the older computer, then a $50 investment will fix that for You.
If your computer’s sound is good now and you DON’T need the higher fidelity or you don’t think you could distinguish the difference like me, then might as well keep the money for something else.
